A Message from the Leadership
Welcome to the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) the
University of Sierra Leone, the premier institution for medical education and health
services training in Sierra Leone. As a proud constituent campus of the University of Sierra
Leone, we bear the distinguished title of being the
nation’s first medical school.
Established on April 12, 1988, by the Government of
Sierra Leone, with generous support from the
Nigerian Government and the World Health
Organization, COMAHS was founded on a visionary
mission: to train our own local medical professionals
and reduce the nation’s reliance on doctors trained
abroad. Today, we stand as the principal center for
developing the healthcare leaders of tomorrow.
Our Mandate
Our core purpose is to strengthen Sierra Leone’s
healthcare system from within. We achieve this by:
Training a diverse range of competent professionals, including Medical Doctors,
Nurses, Midwives, Pharmacists, and Allied Health experts.
Conducting vital health research that directly informs national health policies and
practices.
Supporting national health crises, from disease outbreaks like Ebola to evaluating
new vaccines.
Academic Structure
COMAHS is organized into five specialized faculties, designed to foster excellence in
specific health disciplines:
I. Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences
II. Faculty of Clinical Sciences
III. Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery
IV. Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences
V. Faculty of Medical Laboratory Sciences and Diagnostics
These faculties deliver a comprehensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma,
and professional certificate programs.
Our Campus
Our main campus, located at Kossoh Town, Jui, in the eastern part of Freetown, provides
a conducive learning environment equipped with modern lecture halls, advanced
laboratories, clinical skills labs, and dedicated administrative buildings. It is here that
theory meets practice.
Key Programmes
We offer rigorous, nationally relevant programs tailored to meet the demands of the
health sector. Our flagship offerings include:
MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery): An approximate 6-
year program including internship.
BSc Nursing
Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm)
BSc Medical Laboratory Sciences
Various Allied Health Programmes
Our Impact
Since our inception, COMAHS has played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s health
landscape. We are proud to be responsible for training the vast majority of Sierra Leone’s
doctors and pharmacists, while our research continues to guide national health strategies
and clinical trials.
