CERTIFICATE SHORT COURSES

 Introduction

IPAM is once again introducing another set of intensive short courses in financial management and accounting disciplines at certificate level. These short courses have been upgraded to normal semester curricula and are examinable at the end of the programme.

These courses are designed especially for matured professionals. Participants who do not attain the required pass grade at the end of the training programme will be awarded a certificate of participation only.

No prerequisite entry requirement is needed for these certificate courses. But successful participants who wish to apply for any University degree programme in future will be required to meet the University of Sierra Leone entry requirement of five (5) credits.

Strategic Management in the Hospitality & Tourism Industry (CSC1701)

This 6-week course (2 weeks per month) is intended to help participants integrate the knowledge obtained from previous courses (e.g., marketing, finance, accounting, operations, etc.) while also introducing them to new strategic management concepts. Participants will continuously explore what managers must do and do well to give a business its competitive advantage. A key element of the course is the use of the case method to help participants develop a “strategic instinct” by learning through detailed examples. References will be made to Sierra Leone, where applicable.

Target Group: This certificate course is designed for matured professionals, entrepreneurs, hotel owners, individuals at the strategic level of the hospitality industry and those aspiring to venture into the hospitality industry.

Public Sector Financial Management (CSC1702)

This 6-week course (2 weeks per month) provides a thorough basis for understanding the logic behind and nature of all the financial practices associated with governments and their affiliations. It allows participants to grasp fully the financial and reporting framework necessary before focusing on deriving the public sector-wide financial statements.

Target Group: This course is designed for matured professionals, Administrative Managers and decision making individuals without financial background but are involved in financial decision making in their organisations or institutions.

Accounting for Non-Accountants (CSC1703)

This 6-week course (2 weeks per month) will help participants gain a better understanding of financial terminology, information and implications. It will guide participants in applying basic financial concepts that remove guesswork from decision making and integrate financial information with other business functions. At the end of the training programme participants should be able to communicate and work more effectively with financial professionals in their organization or institution.

Target Group: This course is designed for matured professionals, Administrative Managers and decision making individuals without financial background but are involved in financial decision making in their organisations or institutions.

Financial Management Practices for Non-Financial Managers (CSC1704)

This 6-week course (2 weeks per month) aims to provide participants, who have no formal training in finance; with an understanding of the financial consequences of their decisions, and equip them with basic financial management tools to enable them make decisions that will enhance the value of their organisations. It provides tools that enable participants make sense of the numbers, and addresses issues of corporate financial planning and management of the organisation’s limited resources.

The course will also demonstrate how to evaluate investment proposals and evaluate product marketing strategies. At its conclusion, the course would have provided an array of financial tools, concepts and insights that will enhance managerial effectiveness and competitive advantage.
