Fourah Bay College (FBC), University of Sierra Leone, has announced a six-week Remedial Programme in English Language and Mathematics designed to strengthen students' foundational competencies and improve their readiness for university education.

The initiative responds to concerns over persistent poor performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), particularly in English and Mathematics—subjects that have hindered many students from gaining admission to universities and tertiary institutions across Sierra Leone.

Recognising these subjects as critical to academic success across all disciplines, FBC has introduced the programme to help prospective students improve their proficiency, build academic confidence, and better prepare for higher education.

Programme Details

· Duration: 1 August – 15 September 2026
· Venue: Lecture halls, Fourah Bay College, Mount Aureol Campus
· Facilitators: Qualified lecturers from FBC's relevant academic departments

The programme is open not only to students seeking admission to Fourah Bay College but also to those applying to other universities and tertiary institutions nationwide.

Expected Benefits

· Improved proficiency in English Language and Mathematics
· Enhanced readiness for university-level studies
· Greater confidence in academic reading, writing, and communication
· Stronger quantitative reasoning skills

Fees

· English Language or Mathematics only: NLe 1,100
· Combined English and Mathematics: NLe 1,600

For students whose university aspirations have been affected by weaknesses in these core subjects, the FBC Remedial Programme offers a valuable opportunity to strengthen academic foundations and prepare for the next stage of their educational journey.

FBC encourages students, parents, and guardians to view the programme as an important investment in academic preparation and future success.

The initiative reflects Fourah Bay College's enduring commitment to academic excellence, educational inclusion, and widening access to quality higher education. As one of Africa's most historic institutions approaches its Bicentennial celebration, FBC continues to respond to contemporary educational challenges and create meaningful opportunities for the next generation of university students.

For aspiring university students, this is more than a remedial programme, it is a chance to strengthen foundations, rebuild confidence, and move closer to achieving academic dreams.
