New Deputy Vice-Chancellor Assumes Office at COMAHS

New Era at COMAHS as Professor Samai Hands Over to Professor Russell
New England Ville, Sierra Leone – A formal handover ceremony marked a transition in leadership at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) on Friday, 10th October 2025. The outgoing Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohamed Samai, officially handed over responsibilities to the newly appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor James Russell, in a ceremony held at the DVC Conference Room.

Professor Hector Morgan chaired the event. In his farewell address, Professor Samai expressed his pleasure in handing over to his successor, whom he described as a “friend, brother, and colleague.” He emphasized the importance of succession, stating, “You need to allow someone else to continue where you stopped.”

He expressed strong confidence in Professor Russel’s ability to lead, noting, “Prof Russel has been part of the system and therefore is quite familiar with the vision, mission, and system of COMAHS.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Professor Samai highlighted several key achievements, including the exponential growth of the student population and its significant positive impact on Sierra Leone’s health sector. He also outlined several senate-approved programs and new curricula documents awaiting approval.

Offering both reassurance and encouragement, Professor Samai urged the new DVC to build upon the existing foundation and work collaboratively with the team. He concluded by assuring Professor Russel of his ongoing support, stating he would remain available “at any moment for advice, support, and service.”

In his response, Professor Russel thanked the University of Sierra Leone (USL) administration for entrusting him with the role. He commended his mentors, both present and absent, and paid a special tribute to his predecessor.
“Prof Samai, whose door I will keep knocking, is a brother and more than that. We have been discussing as alumni, the strategic ways of boosting COMAHS,” Professor Russel said.

Outlining his leadership philosophy, he pledged a collaborative and open-door approach. “I will not be a solitary leader; I will serve, and my doors are open. I will try to learn quickly,” he stated, while acknowledging that challenges lie ahead. He concluded by making a heartfelt appeal to all stakeholders for their support in his new role.
