FBC Debate Chapter Presents International Awards to University Administration

The Sierra Leone Debating Council (SLDC), Fourah Bay College (FBC) Chapter, formally presented an array of trophies, certificates, and medals to the University administration on January 8 2026. The presentation was made to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Baio, at the DVC Conference Room.

The accolades were earned by the chapter through outstanding performances in the recent Pan-African Universities Debating Championship held in South Africa. At the continental championship, the team delivered an impressive display in debate and public speaking events and emerged as winners in the cultural presentation category.

The students, who represented Fourah Bay College and, by extension, the University of Sierra Leone (USL), were:

· Abdul Rahman Jalloh – President, SLDC FBC Chapter
· Esther Tholley – Vice President, SLDC FBC Chapter

The team was coached by former Students’ Union President, Alfred Sesay.

Professor Andrew Baio received the awards on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aiah Lebbie. In his congratulatory remarks, Professor Baio commended the team for their excellence and resilience.

“The academic community is very proud of you,” stated Professor Baio. “You have taken FBC to an admirable position. We urge you to maintain this resilience in your academic pursuits and to always strive to uphold the reputation of the University of Sierra Leone.”

Coach Alfred Sesay thanked the administration for its support and assured them of his continued dedication. “I remain committed to coaching and mentoring interested students in public speaking and debate,” Sesay affirmed.

The presentation ceremony highlighted the continuing tradition of academic excellence and extracurricular achievement at Fourah Bay College.
