Fourah Bay College Awarded First-Ever Jean Monnet Project in Sierra Leone
Fourah Bay College, part of the University of Sierra Leone, is proud to announce that it has been selected as the first higher education institution in Sierra Leone to benefit from a Jean Monnet Project under the prestigious Erasmus+ Programme funded by the European Union.
The project, titled “European Interdisciplinary Studies in Sierra Leone” (EU4SL), was selected under the 2024 Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Actions call (ERASMUS-JMO-2024-HEI-TCH-RSCH), and has been awarded a grant of €31,500.00 (Project Reference Number: 101176668).
The academic coordinator of the EU4SL project is Dr. Kamara Mohamed Foray, who leads a dedicated and interdisciplinary academic team composed of faculty members from the Department of Political Science, the Department of Economics and Commerce and the Department of Law. This collaboration brings together a wealth of academic expertise and diverse perspectives, essential to the innovative and integrative nature of the project.
Launched on 1 November 2024, EU4SL will run for a period of 36 months, during which it aims to enhance the understanding and teaching of European studies in Sierra Leone through a range of educational and outreach activities.
At the heart of the project is a Jean Monnet Module consisting of six specialized courses designed to examine and compare European and African experiences in areas such as political economy, development, international relations, economic integration, political ideologies, and communication strategies. These courses are:
- Comparative Analysis of European and African Political Economies
- Development Politics in Europe and Africa
- European Union-Africa Relations in International Politics
- Economic Integration: Comparing the EU and African Models
- Political Philosophy and Ideologies in Europe and Africa
- Communication Strategies and Public Diplomacy in EU-African Relations
In addition to academic coursework, the EU4SL project will host public conferences, and support the production and dissemination of research publications addressing the evolving dynamics of European and African integration. A dedicated project website has already been developed and be accessed through https://eu4sl.vercel.app/.
Next Steps
The immediate next steps in the implementation of EU4SL include the creation of , followed by the enrolment of students in the newly developed courses. These efforts will serve to establish a lasting academic platform for interdisciplinary European Studies in Sierra Leone and to foster dialogue on EU-Africa cooperation among students, scholars, and policy stakeholders.
This project highlights the commitment of the European Union to supporting academic excellence and global partnerships and reflects Fourah Bay College’s growing role as a center for international learning and policy dialogue in West Africa.
