Faculty of Medical Laboratory and Diagnostics

This is a new faculty in the College which aims at training Medical Laboratory Scientists and Diagnosticians to meet the expanding workforce needs in the health sector. The faculty trains Scientists with the potential of developing careers in Laboratory Medicine (clinical scientists or forensic scientist), Biotechnologists (Clinical epidemiologist, Industrial mierobiology), Clinical Research Scientists, Toxicologist, Bioinformatics and Genomic experts, Biosafety and Biosecurity experts, and Health Facility Quality Systems Managers. The faculty currently has four departments namely: Basic Sciences, Medical Laboratory and Pathological Sciences, Medical Microbiology and Molecular Biology, and Diagnostics.

The faculty runs various academic programmes leading to the award of an Advanced Diploma m Medical Laboratory Sciences, or a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Medical Laboratory Sciences. In addition, the faculty runs Master’s (Special master’s with thesis) and PhD programmes.

Requirement for enrolment into the advanced Diploma programme are as follows:

A minimum of five credits at WASSCE, C6 or better in the following subjects: English Language, Chemistry, Biology or Health science, Mathematics or Further Mathematics, and Physics/Core Science, in not more than two sittings, or its equivalent.

 

Requirement for admission into the BSc. (Hons) in Medical Laboratory Sciences are as follows:

  • A minimum of five credit at WASSCE, C5 or better in the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics Further Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology or Health Science and Physics/Core science at WASSCE with a maximum aggregate of 21 in not more than two sittings or its equivalent qualification.
  • Candidates with five credits or its equivalent who obtain a good pass in the 3-year Advance diploma in medical laboratory sciences may be admitted to the second (2nd) of the programme.
