Background

The department of Mechanical and Maintenance Engineering is one that combines two engineering disciplines – Mechanical Engineering and Maintenance Engineering. While mechanical engineering is concerned with the design and analyses of machines of all types (including but not limited to automobiles, airplanes, power generation systems, biomedical instrumentation, robots, manufacturing systems, household appliances, fluids that interact with machines and the materials from which machines are constructed), maintenance engineering is concerned with the practice of ensuring these machines/products live out their service lives efficiently and at an optimum cost. Thus, the aim of the department is to produce mechanical and maintenance engineers that will be able to apply the knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering to design systems, components or processes to meet desired needs of society within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability.

The program leading to a B.Eng. (Hons.) degree in Mechanical and Maintenance Engineering is a five years programme with the first year spent doing foundation courses which are common for all engineering disciplines. These courses, which are run at the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, include Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The students are exposed to the departmental modules at year two. In the transition from year 4 to 5, the students are placed in industry for at least four months where they are exposed to the rudiments of real-life engineering practices and problem solution.
