A Vibrant Wing of Our University’: VCP Commends IPAM’s Dedication, Pledges Support for New Centres
Dedication, Pledges Support for New Centres The Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, Professor Aiah Randolph Lebbie, has lauded the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) for its unwavering commitment to entrepreneurship education, describing the institution as a dynamic and indispensable part of the university. Professor Lebbie made the remarks during the opening ceremony of Entrepreneurship Week 2026, held on March 24 in the courtyard in front of the University Secretariat building at IPAM. The annual event celebrates the integration of entrepreneurship into IPAM’s educational framework. It serves as the backdrop for the unveiling of three new Centres of Excellence by the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie. The ceremony drew a distinguished cross-section of leaders from the public and private sectors, academia, development partners, and students. In his address, the Vice Chancellor and Principal did not hold back his admiration for the IPAM community. “I recognise the value in what IPAM does,” he said. “For me, it is such a vibrant wing of the University of Sierra Leone, and I have the greatest regard for them. I admire the staff's dedication most. It is unbelievable that staff come here in the morning and don’t leave until after 9 pm, which shows you how much of a commitment they show to this institution. And by extension, I know that our students are in good hands because of the value they instil in you.” Reflecting on the newly centres, including the Digital Finance and AI Center, the Writing Centre, and the for Consultancy and Professional Development, Professor Lebbie drew a vivid contrast with his own student days. “As stated by an alumnus, Mr. Gulama, who did not enjoy such opportunities when he was a student, most of us did not either,” he recalled. “Most of my dissertation was done in handwriting, and I had to give it to the typist to type. You can imagine if mistakes were made, how long it would take to make corrections and move ahead.” He described the new centres as “very strategic” and urged students to seize the opportunities before them. “Of course, learning Chinese is a must for me,”he added with a smile. “But honestly, students have to take advantage of these initiatives. As a professor, I have never stopped learning. Improve your language skills by reading.” Demonstrating his personal commitment, the Vice Chancellor and Principal announced a direct contribution to one of the new centres. “On behalf of the Chancellor and the University, I’m going to contribute twenty thousand Leones for the Digital Finance and AI Center,” he said. “I know you need these resources to support these centres to admirable heights, and I’m going to benefit as well, as the university stands to benefit.” He assured the IPAM community of his continued support, saying, “Whatever support you need to raise our profile is my desire to ensure that.” Addressing students directly, Professor Lebbie shared a personal story to underscore the rapid pace of change. “You have to go through trying times. Let me share my experience with you as a student. The world is changing today. I had to travel from Njala to Freetown to make a phone call. Today, technology is advancing and making life more comfortable. It’s pleasing when you are in a beautiful environment.” He concluded by extending his gratitude to all who made the occasion possible. “So, my DVC, I thank you and all of my staff, our partners that have come to support this initiative we have embarked on. I know we are going to move forward and make the country proud of us. My doors are open for any assistance.” By Dr. Tonya Musa Director of Communication and International Relations, University of Sierra Leone
